The Lewis Group Help Local Community Centre
Senior managers & directors at Café West, Bradford.A team of 14 senior managers and directors from Cleckheaton-based The Lewis Group has been praised by a local community leader for their practical help and support in renovating a healthy living centre in the nearby town of Allerton near Bradford.
Café West, which opened in April 2004 after a successful bid to the National Lottery, offers a range of services and facilities that aim to improve the health and wellbeing of local people. It welcomes around 130 people through its doors every week for classes ranging from stop smoking to ‘boxercise’, and teenage health clubs to combat obesity.
Although still comparatively ‘new’, several of the most well-used facilities were already in need of redecorating, so Ann Wild, Centre Development Manager, decided to call in outside help: “The hall in particular was beginning to look a bit shabby, and there were two other rooms that needed a lick of paint,” she says.
“The Lewis Group came to us as part of their Community Investment programme driven by their parent company, Cattles plc, looking to support a worthy cause, and we were most grateful for their help. They did a fantastic job and have transformed the place. Not only that, but the sofas donated from a local furniture business, Connection, are brilliant. I think everyone enjoyed doing something completely different from their everyday jobs.”
David Berry, Managing Director of The Lewis Group was happy to help: “It’s a worthy cause as the centre helps so many people each year to address their health issues. We actually had great fun doing it, and it feels good to have given something back to the local community. Although all we did was give a few rooms a lick of paint, we think that it will make it a much brighter and happier place to exercise and listen to the invaluable advice given by the group.”.
Café West serves the many communities of West Bradford with a community café, physical activity programme, parental support, children and young people’s health programme, art for health, advice and support services, complimentary therapies and learning and training opportunities.
